Folk is a derivative of the blues, as is country and folk bears many similarities. As with country music, the emphasis is placed on the acoustic instruments. Yet somehow folk music has a political ideology attached to it, a tradition rooted in American mythology. We know of folk from the musicians at the beggning of the 20th century but primarily the common usage of the term “folk music” is linked closely to the rise of Arlo Guthrie in the 1940s and 50s. Now, years later we can find artists such as Nancy Griffith and Dar Williams associated with that label. Take a look through these websites and learn a little about this rich and storied genre.
